Drone Tech Aerial kicked off this year with the SCORE racing series down in Mexico filming the San Felipe 250. This is the first in the series of races concluding with the famous Baja 1000. Although this is far away from home in Los Angeles, we are international travel ready.
Filming trophy trucks with drones at high speed is no easy task. To create good usable content with aerial video requires a drone pilot and separate camera operator. After having our production meeting, we take our crew and drone out to the proposed filming spots and practice flying with camera rehearsal to achieve routes and routines that will allow us to capture the action at speed. We also use a variety of different lenses to achieve a certain look or to create a performance trade off to create longer or more impacting shots.
At this event, we used the DJI Inspire 1 Pro drone. It offers the best balance of camera and aircraft performance. The issue with this drone is its overall top speed. Maxing out at just under 40MPH, it takes some clever planning but the drone can deliver great tracking shots.
We feel the difference between average and spectacular drone work is relative height above ground and lens focal length. We pride ourselves on being able to put the drone in the action low and fast to create very dynamic action packed shots. I watched in horror as other drone pilots hired for the event flew at upwards of 100ft making the shots in my opinion flat and uneventful.
Additionally, being a seasoned manned aircraft pilot myself helps since I am constantly on the radios deconflicting with the other 11 helicopter pilots in the area. It is important that the helicopter pilots covering the event are comfortable with the drone pilots since there is a great level of trust that the drone operation will not create a safety problem. At the 2016 Baja 1000, without incident, I successfully flew with over 37 manned helicopters.
If you are looking for the ultimate drone team and aerial service provider for capturing motorsports action, I do believe that we are the best in the business. Please feel free to get in contact with us to discuss your needs.
Best,
